Chiarelli remembers ‘Hurricane’ McCallion as a champion for women

By CityNews Ottawa

Former Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli remembers the late Mississauga Mayor 'Hurrican' Hazel McCallion for her impatience when it came to the progress of women's rights.

“For decades, she was recognized as a politician who could get things done,” said Chiarelli on The Sam Laprade Show. “Hazel always had a plan. It was this. 'Think like a man, act like a lady and work like a dog.'”

McCallion died at the age of 101 over the weekend. She served as mayor of Mississauga for 12 terms (1978 – 2014) until she was 94 years old.

Known for being an unstoppable force, earning her the moniker 'Hurricane Hazel', McCallion was a trailblazer for women in work, politics and sports.

“She broke into politics before women were even welcomed in the corridors of power,” said Chiarelli. “Her ceaseless energy propelled her to become one of Canada's most unbeatable politicians.

“Many of my greatest memories as mayor was to be in the same room as Mayor McCallion watching her do her thing and winning with respect. She was an artist at that.”
