City offering food, medication help for residents affected by storm recovery

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Residents in need of food resources following Saturday’s storm will be able to turn to the City of Ottawa for help.

According to an announcement from the City on Thursday, May 26, the City is partnering with community agencies to connect residents in need during the storm recovery.

Food resources, including home delivery and pick-up options, are available through the City.

To find the nearest food resources, visit ottawa.ca/resident-support.

Residents can also call 211 for information on government community-based health and social services, including food resources.

Affected residents who are in need of financial help can also complete an application and be assessed for emergency assistance for loss of food — and, in exceptional circumstances, help with medication medical supplies and personal care.

To apply, visit the online application for emergency assistance or call 311 and select option 4.

If you are already in receipt of Ontario Works, please call your caseworker directly.

Residents should note, however, that 311 is experiencing a higher number of calls than usual. Everyone is asked to remain patient as workers respond to calls as quickly as possible.

According to Mayor Jim Watson, the municipal phone line has handled 7,300 calls between Saturday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 25, and that 3,600 of those calls happened on Tuesday, May 24.

In light of the call volumes, the City is asking that residents only call 311 for urgent matters.
