City releases construction plans for remainder of 2018

By Stuart McGinn

City officials held their annual technical briefing on construction work for the remainder of the year, Friday.

The general overview is – less work, but overall, slightly larger traffic impacts for residents compared to years past.

“I don't think we have as many projects as we day, say, two or three years ago,” said Phillipe Landry, with the city's traffic services, “In terms of specific impacts for traffic, there's still a lot of projects going on, but they're more spread out across the city.”

Those projects include the renewal of Elgin Street, work to repave and introduce a segregated bike lane on the Portage Bridge, the installation of a pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the 417 at Parkdale, and a bridge over the Rideau Canal between Clegg Avenue and Fifth Street.

Smaller projects will also bring closures on the Airport Parkway, in the area around the Art Gallery, and at City Hall, where bollards will be installed, amidst other upgrades.

City officials also confirmed that their wastewater sewage project is delayed by six months and will now be completed in 2020.

The city estimates there's roughly 250 road, sewer, water projects taking place in this construction season. And $10 million will go toward annual road renewal projects.
