Climate trends, snowfall have contributed to closure of Canal this year: Carleton University prof

For the first time in its 50 year history, the Rideau Canal Skateway is closed for a winter season in Ottawa.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) announced on Friday, Feb. 24, that the weather “got the best” of them this year.

The Rideau Canal Skateway, the world's largest outdoor skating rink, first opened for the 1970-71 season and has opened every year since – until now.
