Closures, less commuters helping Ottawa snow crews make significant progress

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Ottawa's Manager of Road Services is thankful for all of the school and business closures, as less traffic on local streets has allowed winter storm cleanup efforts to move much more efficiently.

City plows had been concentrating on keeping arterial roads clean after heavy snowfall started on Tuesday afternoon, but as the worst of the storm has passed Wednesday morning, Luc Gagne said more resources have been turned onto residential streets.

Listen to the full conversation with Gagne on 1310 NEWS' Ottawa Today with Mark Sutcliffe:

He thinks most roads, including side streets, in the city should be driveable by Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Gagne said the process of getting sidewalks cleared is a slower process, although the city would be throwing as many resources as it could at them Wednesday.

Over the course of Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, Gagne explained that residents can expect to see equipment working to push snow banks back to widen roads, and of course, get sidewalks in good shape.

A parking ban remains in effect for Wednesday night.
