Conservation authority warns of increased water levels as storm approaches

By CityNews Ottawa

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) is keeping an eye on rising water levels as the region awaits another winter storm event ahead of the holiday weekend.

With rainfall amounts of up to 40 millimetres forecasted for Friday, Dec. 23, the RVCA is advising residents, particularly those living near creeks and streams, to keep a close watch on water levels in the coming days.

Water levels are generally low at this time of year in the valley, and no significant flooding is anticipated during the incoming weather event.

Some precautions the RVCA suggest residents take include:

  • Ensuring sump pump is in good working condition and has a backwater valve
  • Ensuring easy access to a portable backup generator and pump
  • Ensuring downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least three metres from the dwelling
  • Securing items that might float away as flows increase
  • Removing valuable items from basements or lower floors that could be subject to flooding
  • Keeping emergency phone numbers handy
  • Familiarizing yourself with your municipality’s Emergency Preparedness Plan
