As the weather gets nicer and temperatures continue to rise, construction projects in the city are about to begin.

Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney, who also serves as the chair of the City of Ottawa's transportation committee, and Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder hosted an event at the Strandherd Drive widening project to celebrate the official start of the 2022 construction season on May 16.

“The Strandherd Drive widening is a major and complex infrastructure project and is a significant investment in Barrhaven,” said Coun. Harder in a release. “We are extremely pleased that construction is currently ahead of schedule with completion anticipated in advance of our original fall 2023 target date.”

The project is an investment of approximately $112 million in Barrhaven, and is an attempt to increase capacity for traffic volumes and create more space for cyclists and pedestrians.

The City of Ottawa will invest approximately $702 million in infrastructure in 2022 including:

  •     $45 million for structures and bridges
  •     $18 million for culverts
  •     $47 million for buildings and parks
  •     $11.5 million for sidewalks and pathways
  •     $118 million for integrated road, water and sewer reconstruction projects

“There are over 600 active projects across the city, including municipal roads, sewer, and water, as well as buildings and parks projects,” said Coun. Tierney. “I am pleased to officially kick-off Ottawa's 2022 construction season and thank residents for their continued patience and support, especially during this busy construction season.”

Along with the Strandherd Drive widening, some of the projects include the stage two light rail transit construction, the Montreal Road revitalization, the Chief William Commanda Bridge, the Carlington Heights Pumping Station upgrade and more.
