Council approves free transit for newly-arrived refugees

By CityNews Ottawa

The City of Ottawa is providing free transit to refugees arriving in the nation's capital.

Ottawa city council approved the plan on April 27 to give free transit passes to new people in Ottawa for their first six months. The City will give the passes to the community and social services department and its partnering agencies, at no charge, who will then distribute the passes to its refugee clients.

The plan was originally intended for Ukrainian people coming to Ottawa, but council approved an amended proposal by Coun. Catherine McKenney to expand free transit passes to all refugees arriving in the capital.
