Environment Canada assessing damage from EF-3 tornado

Environment Canada is confirming that it was an EF-3 tornado which ripped through the Dunrobin and Gatineau areas.

The storm created wind speeds between 180 and 200 km per hour.

According to the City of Ottawa, up to 60 buildings were destroyed or partially destroyed in the storm.

Meteorologist Gerald Cheng says storms like Friday's aren't uncommon for this time of year.

“During the summer time and spring even, in southern Ontario and eastern Ontario, we still get a lot of these warm and humid air masses coming up from the south,” he explained. “Those are the necessary ingredients to allow for thunderstorms like this to form.”

Cheng added that when a warning is issued, people should take those notices seriously and follow instructions given out.

A damage survey team is assessing the outcome of the storm Saturday, and they are hoping to provide more information as it becomes available.
