Fraser on Howard accusations, ‘Sometimes people do and say strange things’

By Mike Vlasveld

With little more than a week until election day, Ottawa South Liberal Party Candidate John Fraser is reacting to accusations that he and his volunteers have been spying on Progressive Conservative Party Candidate Karin Howard.

An all-candidates debate was held at Hillcrest High School in the riding, Tuesday evening.

Amid discussions about party politics and hot button issues affecting in the area, Howard claimed that she has been “followed a certain party,” adding that she was “on edge,” and that “someone should ask the Liberal candidate what they are doing.”

Fraser addressed the accusation on 1310 NEWS' The Rick Gibbons Show.

“It's simply untrue. It's just — it's bizarre,” he said. “You know, campaigns — there's a lot of pressure in campaigns, and sometimes people do and say strange things. [Howard's remarks] are not grounded in reality.”

Howard was contacted several times for comment on this story, but has yet to return any phone calls.

Her campaign manager replied via e-mail:

“Unfortunately Karin will be unable to join in as she has a prior booking with members of the community.

She appreciates the opportunity and hopes she’ll be able to join in at a future time.
