Ground markings, buttons introduced at Aylmer’s Parc des Cèdres, as visitors have hard time physical distancing

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Gatineau says getting people to adhere to physical distancing rules at Parc des Cèdres, by the Aylmer Marina, has become a problem as the weather has gotten warmer.

More people have been converging on the popular recreational spot as local temperatures have climbed, and according to the city, its staff members have had to intervene close to 1,000 times in the park to remind people to keep their distance from one another.

Due to the ongoing issue, the city has come up with an intervention plan for the park's users.

Several communication tools are being introduced to help visitors to Parc des Cèdres maintain proper physical distancing:

  • Signs posted at the park's entrances to remind visitors of the importance of following proper distancing and hygiene practices;
  • Ground markings on the shared bike path will remind people to keep their distance when they pass others;
  • Circles on the grass will promote distancing: families and small groups will be able to gather within those circles to enjoy each other's company while maintaining a safe distance from other users of the park;
  • Visitors to the park will receive buttons, encouraging them to serve as ambassadors of proper physical distancing; and
  • Park monitors will wear a vest designed to remind visitors of the importance of physical distancing.

Municipal crews have also been emptying and cleaning trash cans in the parks more frequently. The city wants to thanks those visitors who have been cleaning up after themselves.
