Intensive care unit reopens at Gatineau Hospital

By Mike Vlasveld

The CISSS de l'Outaouais says the Gatineau Hospital has reopened its intensive care unit (ICU).

The hospital shut the unit down over the weekend due to low staffing levels, but was able to reopen Wednesday after reassigning nurses already trained in intensive care.

The CISSS de l'Outaouais says it's taking the following steps in order to add more intensive care resources at the Gatineau hospital:

  • Calling on retired nurses who have worked in intensive care.
  • Talking to other Quebec hospitals to explore the possibility of lending nurses temporarily.
  • Calling on independent labour agencies with nurses qualified to work in intensive care.

The CISSS de l'Outaouais adds, it's confident that the reopening of the intensive care unit will be sustainable.
