Judge orders eviction of TUPOC from St. Brigid’s Church

By CityNews Ottawa

The organization known as 'The United People of Canada' (TUPOC) lost its court bid and a judge has ordered the group to be evicted from a church located in Ottawa's Lowertown area.

TUPOC set up shop in St. Brigid's Church earlier this summer, as part of a conditional offer to buy the space. The group claims to have no connection to the protest that denounced COVID-19 restrictions and the Trudeau government in February, though several members of its board have ties to the convoy movement.

A 'Notice of Termination of Tenant' was provided to TUPOC on Aug. 17, giving the group five days to leave the church, which is located Lowertown.

Despite an eviction order that went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, members of TUPOC remained at the St. Brigid's Church.

The building's owner said the group missed payment deadlines to buy the property, and also failed to pay rent and asked a judge to enforce the group's eviction.

The judge agreed. It's not clear when the eviction will be carried out.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson on Twitter appeared thrilled by the decision, saying “good riddance to these crackpots.”
