An Ottawa mayoral candidate has released a number of environmental initiatives he would implement across the city should he be elected as the capital's next mayor.
Bob Chiarelli is one of 14 candidates vying to be the next mayor of Ottawa.
Chiarelli's plan includes not expanding the urban boundary, replacing the tree cover lost over the last four years and halting construction of new roads that aren't already contracted.
The mayoral candidate told The Sam Laprade Show on Sept. 29 why he wants to put a pause on new road construction projects.
“Rather than spend hundreds of millions of dollars on building new roads, those funds should be used to repair existing roads,” he said.
Chiarelli said the City of Ottawa needs to work with the federal and provincial governments and other organizations and focus on practical actions it can afford.
One of the initiatives in Chiarelli's plan would make the Trail Road landfill the last garbage dump in Ottawa and instead focus on cleaner ways to reduce waste.
“We will abolish the need for landfills and go to new technology which would convert waste into usable gas,” he said.
