Montfort Catholic Elementary School declares COVID-19 outbreak

By Mike Vlasveld

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has added Montfort Catholic Elementary School to its list of ongoing COVID-19 institutional outbreaks.

The agency says one student and one staff member have tested positive for the virus.

It's just the second school in Ottawa to show up on OPH's outbreak list after Monsignor Paul Baxter reported two student and two staff cases of COVID-19.

As public health officials explained before the school year, there must be two or more cases at school for it to be declared a COVID-19 outbreak.

There are 26 institutional outbreaks across Ottawa as of Tuesday, September 22.

OPH is reporting its largest-ever single-day spike in COVID-19 cases, Tuesday, with 93 and three deaths.

The three deaths are linked to an outbreak at West End Villa long-term care, which reported there have been 11 overall deaths related to COVID-19 as of Monday.

The city's overall COVID-19 death toll is now at 279 since March.

Active cases in Ottawa have risen to 587. Still, there are only 11 people in hospital — two of whom are in intensive care.
