NCC closing 24 Sussex Drive to complete repairs

By CityNews Ottawa

The National Capital Commission (NCC) has announced it is shutting down 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the Canadian Prime Minister, in order to complete much needed repairs.

In a news release, the NCC said it has started the process of closing the site and relocating workers in order to remove dangerous materials like asbestos in the walls, and to replace obsolete mechanical, electrical and heating systems.

The state of 24 Sussex Drive has been a concern for decades, and in 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decided not to move his family into the historic building in order to give the NCC time to complete repairs.

The NCC said it hopes to have the bulk of the work started in the spring of 2023.

The work needs to take place regardless of any decisions around the future of the heritage site, said the NCC. It has been the official residence of Canada's Prime Minister since 1951.
