An Orléans resident is $500,000 richer after winning the top prize in the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) Instant $500 Grand Lottery

Gerardus Vriend, 67, said he has been a regular Instant ticket player for the past two years.

“I scanned my ticket while at the store and I couldn't believe what I was seeing,” he said while picking up his winnings at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. “I scanned it about four times to be sure it was real!”

Vriend, who is a military retiree, plans to pay off his mortgage with his winnings.

“I will also put money aside for my son and daughter and help my granddaughter with her education,” he added. “The rest will be used as a travel fund. I'll be planning some European adventures in the future.

The winning ticket was purchased at an Ultramar on Innes Road in Orléans.
