Ottawa police chief to retire

By Jason White

Ottawa's police chief has announced his upcoming retirement, deciding to end his career 35 years after it began.

In a note to members of his police service, Charles Bordeleau announced he will retire on May 4, and said he plans to publicly announce his retirement at Monday afternoon's police services board meeting.

Bordeleau started his career with Gloucester Police, in 1984. He took over as Ottawa's police chief from Vern White, when he was appointed to the Senate, in 2012. Bordeleau's contract as police chief was extended in 2016.

Bordeleau's departure comes as the city deals with increasing gun and gang violence, a return to its previous community policing model, and a multi-year plan to hire new officers to grow its ranks.

The Ottawa Police Services Board will now begin the search for a new chief of police.
