Ottawa’s 24th ward, six name changes up for city committee approval

By Mike Vlasveld

Ottawa's Finance and Economic Development Committee (FEDCO) could decide to move forward with plans for a brand new ward and name changes for a handful of others when it discusses setting boundaries ahead of next year's municipal election.

At its meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, September 28, FEDCO will take a look at the following ward name changes:

  • Orléans to become Orléans East-Cumberland
  • Innes to become Orléans West-Innes
  • Barrhaven to become Barrhaven West
  • Cumberland to become Orléans South-Navan
  • Rideau-Goulbourn to become Rideau-Jock
  • Gloucester-South Nepean to become Riverside South-Findlay Creek

A new ward, giving the City of Ottawa 24 in total, would be named Barrhaven East.

The reason for the name changes, according to Tuesday's FECO agenda, is simply to better identify the wards based on large communities of interest or geography.

If passed by FEDCO, the boundary and name changes would come before Ottawa City Council for final approval.

Ottawa's next municipal election is set for October 2022.
