Police investigating sexual abuse at City of Ottawa’s Garry J. Armstrong long-term care home

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Ottawa says all of its staff members at its Garry J. Armstrong long-term care facility are cooperating with police after reports of sexual abuse against a resident.

The incident, involving a staff member at the home, happened on Tuesday, October 26, according to city officials.

“As soon as the alleged incident was brought to our attention, the staff was removed from the home, and the resident’s family, Ottawa Police Service and the Ministry of Long-Term Care were immediately notified of the situation,” reads memo from General Manager of Community and Social Services Donna Gray to the mayor and members of city council on Thursday, October 28.

The city says remaining staff members and the victim's family have been providing additional support since the incident was reported.

“We are deeply troubled by this alleged incident,” said Gray. “We do not tolerate any form of abuse or neglect in our homes.”

More updates are expected to be provided as the investigation continues.
