Russian embassy releases video showing alleged Molotov cocktail thrown at building

The Russian embassy in Ottawa has released a video that it said shows a Molotov cocktail being thrown at its building in Sandy Hill.

Russia's ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, said an unidentified person ran from a nearby park toward the embassy shortly after midnight on Sept. 12 and threw a lit Molotov cocktail over the fence before scampering off.

The black and white video shows a person on the sidewalk hurling a bright object over the fence at the front pf the property.

In a Russian-language statement, Moscow's foreign ministry also claimed police have turned a blind eye to “aggressive demonstrators” blocking public access to the embassy's consular section.

Moscow claims police witnessed this incident but didn't intervene. Officials did not specify which police force.

The national division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which is charged with protecting foreign diplomatic properties, said it had opened an investigation, but it would not specify when that happened.

In a statement to CityNews Ottawa, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said no police report has been filed.
