Security bollards may be coming to Sparks Street

By Saif Kaisar

Following Wednesday's City Council meeting, Mayor Jim Watson said he spoke with the “Sparks Street folks” a few days ago about establishing some sort of short term solution, until they can figure out if the area requires a more permanent solution.

“One of the concerns that I've raised is that there's just too many cars that are going down a pedastrian mall,” Waston stated.

The City is expected to install security bollards along Laurier Ave. at the Marion Dewar Plaza. The plans were announced earlier this year.

“Our staff look at all of our facilities and all of our different programs we have, and if they have suggestions to make our communities safer then we're open to those suggestions,” said Watson.

He added that during major events in 2017, the city had brought in loaded dump trucks to block pedastrian areas to ensure vehicles could not gain access to them.

At Marion Dewar Plaza, Ottawa is looking to install around 30 to 40 bollards.
