SIU finds no wrongdoing from OPP in Clarence-Rockland arrest involving 64-year-old man

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Ontario’s police watchdog has found no grounds to believe an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer committed a criminal offence in connection to an arrest that happened in Clarence-Rockland in January.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a 64-year-old man sustained facial fractures during his arrest on January 9.

The investigation into the matter was launched on February 3.

SIU says officers responded after receiving a report that the man damaged property and threatened staff at a residential health facility.

Officers arrested the man under the Mental Health Act for mischief.

The man resisted and attempted to punch one of the officers.

The subject official punched the man twice in the face and took the man to the floor where he landed face first.

Following the investigation, SIU director Joseph Martino found no reasonable grounds to believe that the subject official comported himself unlawfully in his dealings with the man.

The file has been closed.
