Sloly requests 1,800 more officers, civilian personnel for truck protest policing operations

Ottawa’s police chief has asked city council for an additional 1,800 officers and civilian personnel to help with the ongoing truck convoy protest.

In the special city council meeting called by Mayor Jim Watson that took place on Monday, February 7, Chief Peter Sloly made the request for the additional bodies.

As it stands right now, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has 2,100 staff that include sworn officers and civilians.

The mayor said in the meeting that he has request those extra 1,800 officers and staff from the federal and provincial governments.

According to the city's treasurer, that would increase Ottawa’s convoy policing costs to about $2.5 million a day, an increase from the original $800,000 that was reported last week.

Putting that into context, Ottawa spent $1.44 million to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.
