State of emergency declared in Clarence-Rockland

The City of Clarence-Rockland has declared a state of emergency following Saturday night’s storm.
The City declared a state of emergency via social media channels on Saturday, May 21, adding that a large amount od debris was cluttering up streets.
Shelter is available at the Clarence Creek Arena, where cots are provided for residents who need temporary shelter. It also has drinking water, however, residents are asked to bring their own water containers.
Residents may also use the shelter to charge devices, however, there is no internet at the location.
The Red Cross will also be at the arena.
A hotline has also been set up for residents that need to report issues caused by the storm, which can be reached by calling 613-446-6022 and immediately dialing “0.”
The hotline is available until 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 22.

Clarence-Rockland Mayor Mario Zanth said on The Sam Laprade Show on Monday, May 23 that over 200 hydro poles were snapped from the impact of the storm, and countless people lost their homes in the devastation.
The area has now seen three natural disasters in the past five years with the latest storm, along with two major floods.
“If this doesn't provide a wake up call as to what's coming in the next five years, then I don't know what does,” he added.
Mayor Zanth said the municipality is in a good financial position to handle these types of events, and the there is no set date to lift the state of emergency.
“We will remove it once we feel we are in good shape,” he said.
