Student launches petition against more portables at Barrhaven high school

By Jason White

Students at Barrhaven's John McRae Secondary School are fighting the school board's plan to install more portables and shrink the size of the school's sports field.

The school already has 12 portables; the plan is to add another four, and to shorten the school's 400-metre track and reduce the size of its sports field.

A student has begun an online petition, urging the school board to leave the field alone.

The petition points out that shrinking the school's sports fields and the track would mean they would no longer be regulation size for sports like rugby, soccer, football and field hockey.

The petition urges the school board to put the portables somewhere else on the property, or change the school's boundaries so that the number of students match the capacity of the school.
