Five months into the brutal war Russia has waged against Ukraine, civilians continue to be killed and the targets of military attacks.
For Ukrainians who have escaped the war and landed in Canada, Cassian Soltykevich, national secretary for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, told The Sam Laprade Show on July 27 that they often arrive with little to no support.
“We continue to call on all levels of government to provide funding to settlement agencies because the biggest number one issue like it is for many Canadians, is housing,” he said, adding that they must also navigate things like setting up a bank account, getting a social insurance number and finding a job.
Soltykevich said overall, Canada has done well in helping Ukraine but could do more, including providing weapons and ammunition to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
As the war continues, he said they'd continue to call upon the government to support Ukraine and not forget about how the war is threatening the global food supply.
“We're really trying to keep that message with the federal government [and] remind them to not evade their own sanctions they set up,” he said.
