The City of Ottawa's Planning Committee is approving a zoning amendment that would allow the sugar shack in Richelieu Vanier Park to rebuild in time for the 2022 syrup season.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 2020.
The amendment, which passed on Monday, November 8, would permit a replacement building that is about one third larger than the original.
The increased size includes a small addition to accommodate new provincial regulations that require syrup producers to have a separate storage and bottling area. It also ensures enough space is provided to comply with public health regulations that require the evaporator be kept out of public areas.
Recommendations from Monday's meeting will go before city council on Wednesday, November 24.
