What’s open, what’s closed in Ottawa on Remembrance Day

The City of Ottawa is reminding residents of schedule changes for Remembrance Day on Thursday, November 11.

November 11 is not a statutory holiday in the province of Ontario but it is a federal stat, meaning federal government offices and Ottawa City Hall will be closed.

Retail

  • Most retail businesses are required, due to a city bylaw, to remain closed until 12:30 p.m. on November 11.
  • Businesses that are open 24 hours are expected to close from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Transit

  • OC Transpo services will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Thursday, November 11.
  • Veterans who wear their medals or uniforms during National Veterans' Week, from Friday, November 5 to Thursday, November 11, can ride OC Transpo, Para Transpo and Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) buses and paratransit service for no charge. Companions accompanying veterans also ride at no charge.
  • OC Transpo and Para Transpo buses will pull over to the side of the road at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day to observe two minutes of silence, if it is safe to do so.

City services

  • Ottawa City Hall and all seven client service centres, including the Government Service Centre located at 110 Laurier Avenue West, will be closed.
  • There will be no scheduled changes for green bin, recycling or garbage collection.
  • The Trail Road waste facility will be open and will follow regular business hours.
  • The City's Provincial Offences Court, including the courts located at 100 Constellation Crescent, will be closed on Thursday. Business will resume as usual on Thursday.
  • The City's 311 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters.
  • Indoor pools and fitness centres will be open for public swimming, fitness and public skating, with modified schedules. Details can be found on the city's website.
  • All branches and services of the Ottawa Public Library will be closed.
  • City-run childcare centres will be closed.

Banks

  • Most banks will be closed on Thursday.

Mail

  • There will be no mail delivery on Thursday.

Parking

  • All City parking regulations and restrictions apply.
  • Veterans who wear their medals or uniforms or who have a veteran’s license plate on their vehicle can park for free at City Hall on Thursday, November 11 between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Public Health

  • The Sexual Health Clinic at 179 Clarence St. and all satellite clinics will be closed.
  • The Site Needle and Syringe Program mobile van will run from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The office at 179 Clarence St. will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Dental clinics and Parenting in Ottawa drop-ins will be closed.
  • The Ottawa Public Health Information Centre will be closed. Voicemails and emails will be answered within one business day. For the latest health information, visit OttawaPublicHealth.ca.
