Atlético Ottawa unveils new jersey for soccer team’s inaugural year

Atlético Ottawa, the city’s newest sports team, unveiled the jersey its soccer players will be wearing to represent Canada’s capital city in the Canadian Premier League.

The jersey and team colours — red, white and blue — were uncovered Thursday evening in a press announcement and the team’s social media and website.

The jersey has vertical red and white stripes on the front, is trimmed in blue on the collar and sleeves and has the team crest on the left side of the chest.

In the middle is the OnSoccer kit sponsorship logo in blue.

The back features a faded darker red maple leaf against a brighter red background, with the red and white stripes continued on the bottom of the jersey and the league pride on the back of the neck the reads, “We are many, we are one.”

The maple leaf will be visible under the player numbers.

The jersey will also be paired with blue shorts.

“The Macron uniform’s design for Atlético Ottawa’s inaugural season is reflective of parent organization Club Atlético de Madrid’s iconic red-and-white striped kit, which they’ve been using since 1911, but it also incorporates unique elements for the new CPL team and the Ottawa-Gatineau region,” the team says on its website.

The blue, the team says, is inspired by the waters of the Rideau Canal.

“Our inaugural kits demonstrate the club’s on-field identity that is all about courage, never giving up, and playing fiercely committed football for one another while off the field hard work, humility and family focus are core values,” Atlético Ottawa CEO Fernando López said.

The team also premiered the squad numbers its players will wear so that fans can buy customized shirts featuring their favourite player’s number.

The new kit is immediately available for purchase, which can be done through the team's website

The Canadian Premier League announced Ottawa as its eight club member back in February.

The team’s home base will be TD Place at Lansdowne Park and will be lead by team captain Miguel Angel Ferrer “Mista.”

The team has not yet announced  when it will be playing its first home game.

The original start date was set for March 13. But due to COVID-19, the team had pushed its debut back to April 11. However, provincial restrictions of large gatherings remain in place, impacting the start time yet again, which is yet to be determined and announced.
