Roughriders’ Marino apologetic for actions resulting in CFL record suspension

Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Garrett Marino says he regrets an incident that led to the longest suspension in Canadian Football League (CFL) history.

Marino returned to practice on Tuesday, Aug. 16 after serving three separate suspensions — a two-game suspension for his hit on Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, a one-game suspension for a verbal comment about Masoli's heritage, and an illegal tackle on a previous play in the game last month.
“I do regret it,” Marino said. “I wish it could have went differently. I feel horrible Jeremiah got hurt and I just want to move on.”
Marino was ejected from the game following his hit on Masoli. The Ottawa quarterback had to be carted off the field and was later ruled out for 10-12 weeks due to bone surgery on his leg.
Masoli later said he felt the punishment wasn't stiff enough for Marino.
Marino is eligible to return on Friday, Aug. 19 when the Roughriders host the B.C. Lions.
“I feel bad. I let Riders nation down, my teammates down not being out there with the team. It was kind of depressing,” Marino said.
