New Ottawa Deputy Chief coming from Durham regional police

The Ottawa Police Services Board has selected Uday Jaswal as the new Deputy Chief of Police for the Ottawa Police Service.

“When the Board began its national search for a new Deputy Chief, we were committed to finding the best candidate for the job. We needed a highly experienced, respected, and effective law enforcement leader,” said Board Chair Eli El-Chantiry. “The Board is confident that Uday reflects all of the necessary qualities to help lead one of the most respected police services in North America.”

Jaswal is an Ottawa native who has served as a police officer for 23 years, most recently as a Deputy Chief with the Durham Regional Police Service. Prior to that, he spent 21 years with the Ottawa Police Service, where he rose to the rank of Superintendent.

“I am very pleased with the Board's decision and I am very much looking forward to having Uday as a member of the OPS Executive Command, to help support our membership and to work with the community on keeping Ottawa safe,” said Chief Charles Bordeleau.

The police service said Jaswal brings a unique combination of operational, investigative and community policing experience with two Ontario police services, making him an ideal candidate to support the OPS's ongoing mission of serving the rapidly changing community safety needs of communities and residents across Ottawa.

In addition to his work in policing, Jaswal has experience as a community builder. He is a past Chair of the Board of the Directors for the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa and currently serves as a Board Member with both Kinark Child and Family Services and the Family Mediation and Resource Centre in Durham Region.

Jaswal also has several advanced degrees and certifications including a Master of Public Administration Degree from Queen's University, and the Canadian Certification in Risk Management. 

Deputy Chief Jaswal will be sworn in at the board's regular meeting on September 24.
