New Ottawa police chief wants to see city’s force become ‘the best in the world’

Ottawa's new police chief has high hopes for what the city's force can accomplish in the coming years.

Peter Sloly was named to the role of chief Monday morning.

He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy and is a former Deputy Chief of the Toronto Police Service, where he served for 27 years.

He applied for to become Ottawa's police chief back in 2006, but didn't make the city's short list.

Sloly said he has still returned to Ottawa on a number of occasions over the years, so he has a feel for the city and is looking forward to making it his permanent home.

At news conference Monday morning, Sloly described himself as a passionate police officer who believes Ottawa's police service can become one of the best in the world.

The new chief plans to push for his officers to have as many resources available to them as possible, to ensure their safety and that they have all of the tools necessary to do their jobs properly.

Sloly had taken a job with Deliotte in recent years, so he needs to be sworn back in as a police officer.

Another work in progress for the new chief is his French. He said he's taking classes.

Interim chief Steve Bell will stay on until Sloly takes over in October.
