New sponsor to help renovate and upgrade Centrepointe Theatres

By Mike Vlasveld

College Ward Councillor Rick Chiarelli insists this is more than just a name change.

“This partnership with Meridian will result in physical upgrades and renovations at the theatre and will allow the city to continue shining a spotlight on local arts and culture organizations,” he explained at a name unveiling ceremony Tuesday morning.

Canada's third largest credit union is expected to pay $975,000 over the next 15 years for the right to rename Centrepointe Theatres, the Meridian Threatres at Centrepointe.

The city said the sponsorship agreement is part of its ongoing Community Champions Program, which provides sponsors with year-round recognition for their contribution to improving the lives of Ottawa residents.

“The Community Champions Program allows the city to deliver better value to residents and to keep the City on a financially sustainable foot,” said Mayor Jim Watson.

The 954-seat Centrepointe Theatre opened in 1988. A 199-seat studio theatre was added in 2010.
