Ottawa police issue 70 speeding tickets during long weekend Project NoiseMaker crackdown

By Dani-Elle Dubé

The long weekend kept cops busy as they continued to crack down on drivers for Project Noisemaker.

Police were out in full force all over the city where they issued 125 provincial offence notices Friday and Saturday — and the long weekend isn’t even over yet.

In total 70 speeding tickets were given out (44 on Saturday and 26 on Sunday), six for an improper muffler, six for driving while on a cell phone, two for unnecessary noise, one for a child without a seat belt and one notice to a driver with a blood alcohol level above zero to one, just to name a few.

Officers also charged three suspended drivers and one driver for driving with an improper licence.

Project NoiseMaker is a traffic safety initiative by the Ottawa Police Service to crack down on speeding, stunt driving and excessive noise on city streets.

This is the second year for the project.

This year, the project began in April and between April 1 and 29, 4,000 provincial offence notices had already been issued.

In 2020, officers stopped an average of 10 stunt drivers a week and issued 2,300 tickets including about 1,400 for speeding.
