An Ottawa police officer entered the basement of a burning two-storey unit residential building in Vanier and helped residents evacuate.

Ottawa Fire Services says they received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke showing at 130 Barrette St. between St. Charles Street and Marier Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A contents fire was extinguished.

The officer entered the six unit building before firefighters arrived, and those three residents are being assessed by Ottawa Paramedics.

The building, OFS says, will not be habitable.

Firefighters are still on location.

The fire was declared under control at about 1:50 p.m.
