One man is dead after Ottawa police officers used their firearms in an incident near Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre.
According to a witness, just before 8 a.m., Thursday, the man was seen swinging a hatchet near a Royal Bank of Canada in the area.
Police arrived on the scene and attempted to use a taser to bring the suspect down.
Witness Daniel said he saw the man rip out the leads of the taser, and he started getting close to the officers with his axe — that's when the suspect was shot.
“It looked like he was on drugs, maybe,” explained Daniel. “You know, to rip out a taser you've got to be on something.”
An Ottawa police officer suffered minor injuries in the incident.
The transit station near Elmvale Acres has been closed temporarily.
Ontario's Special Investigation Unit is investigating the shooting.
