One of three people who were injured in an explosion at Eastway Tank Pump and Meter on Merivale Road has died, while Ottawa police say five people are missing following the incident.

Emergency crews responded to the site at 1995 Merivale Rd. around 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 14. Fire crews worked throughout the afternoon and evening battling a fire that erupted after the initial explosion.

Three men were taken to hospital — two in critical condition. Ottawa police are confirming Friday, that one of those men has succumbed to his injuries while another remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

Five people continue to be unaccounted for and are missing, say police. It is believed these four men and one woman were at the building when the explosion occurred. Their identities are not being released at this time.

Police say the families and loved ones of those individuals have been notified and are being supported by victim supports and investigators.

Recovery and investigative efforts are underway at the site, but police say it will take time due to heavy damage caused by the explosion and fire.

Officials do not believe that any more survivors will be found.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has sent numerous investigators and will be the lead to determine the origin and cause of the explosion and fire.

The Ottawa Police Arson Unit will act as agents for the coroner and will be the lead investigative unit for the Ottawa Police Service.

The Ministry of Labour will conduct a parallel investigation.

Ottawa Fire Services will provide scene safety and logistical support.
