A fast and efficient response by Ottawa firefighters prevented the fire burning a transport truck from spreading to nearby structures and vehicles.
OFS says is received multiple 9-1-1 calls shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday reporting a transport truck on fire in the 100 block of Iber Rd. in Stittsville.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the 18 wheeler was fully engulfed in smoke and flames and that the driver had exited the vehicle safely.
OFS says the driver informed the crew that the fuel tanks were half full and could contain up to 500 litres. This fuel was leaking as a result of the fire.
A Hazardous Materials Team was dispatched to mitigate the large amount of leaking fluid. The fire was declared under control less than 20 minutes after crews arrived on scene.
Firefighters were able to control the blaze before it spread to nearby vehicles and buildings.
OFS says a tarp, cribbing and absorbent was used to help contain the fuel spill and prevent it from reaching the ditch.
The Ministry of Environment was notified of the spill following which they called in a company to clean the scene.
