Jim Watson has won the race for mayor in Ottawa.
With over 48 per cent of the vote, his closest competition on election night was incumbent Larry O’Brien who had 24 per cent. While Clive Doucet earned slightly under 15 per cent of the vote.
There were some 20 candidates vying for the mayor’s chair, but it Watson, also a former Ottawa mayor, and O’Brien who were consistently out front in public opinion polls in what was a personal and sometimes vicious campaign.
As the province’s municipal affairs minister, Watson co-authored a deal to upload costs from local property taxpayers by taking social services off the property tax bill. Ottawa taxpayers will eventually save more than $120-million as a result of the initiative, he has said.
Watson supporters celebrated his victory at the Ukrainian Hall on Woodroffe Ave.
The sometimes fierce rivals were diplomatic after the polls closed with both committing to making the transition an easy one.
City Council also has a new face – with 10 of the 23 wards having new councilors; most notably former councilor and mayoral candidate Alex Cullen – who was defeated by Mark Taylor in the Bay Ward.
A tightly contested Ward 11 was decided by under 200 votes – with Tim Tierney defeating Michel Bellemare.
