‘We will not go backwards’: O’Brien gracious in defeat

Outgoing mayor Larry O’Brien says he’s giving Jim Watson his full support.
After running a ferocious attack campaign on his main rival, O’Brien took a more gracious tone in a speech to supporters after the results came in on Monday.
Speaking on Rogers TV, the outgoing mayor told the crowd that he’d spoken to Watson after the polls closed.
“I committed to him that we would give him our full support, bring him up to speed on every single file and make sure that we continue building a city that we can all be proud of,” he said.
O’BRIEN thanked supporters for his four years in office and said he’s pleased with his accomplishments.
“We did it with the convention centre,” he said. “We did it with our transit plan. We did it with Landsdowne Park. And I firmly believe, based on the new council that’s been elected, and the new mayor, that we will not be going backwards on any of those important files.”
Watson, in his turn, praised O’Brien and his family and thanked the incumbent for his commitment to the city.
