Flags at half-mast mark tragic anniversary

Monday marks the twenty-first anniversary of the Montreal massacre when a enraged gunman killed fourteen women at an engineering school.
On its website to mark the anniversary L’Ecole Polytechnique says the pain of that day in 1989 “has made way for the continuation of life.”
But it added that the memory of the thirteen students and one staff member who died, as well as the many people who were wounded, lives on.
The school says a bouquet of fourteen white roses will be placed before a memorial plaque early Monday and campus flags will be lowered to half-mast.
Flags on all government of Canada buildings including the Peace Tower in Ottawa will be flown at half-mast as well to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Meantime, a series of solemn ceremonies will be held across the country, including a vigil in Ottawa that begins at 6 p.m. at the women’s monument at Minto Park and an indoor vigil at 7:30 p.m. at the First United and All Saints Westboro churches.
