9-year-old boy drowns in the Rideau River

In a tragedy just days before Christmas, a 9-year-old boy has drowned in the Rideau River.

It happened in Ottawa’s Sandy Hill neighbourhood.

Many neighbours were in shock and expressed sadness at the boy’s death.

“I can relate to (the drowning), my brother drowned in April, when the ice was just coming off a lake on the Quebec side,” said Miranda, a neighbour of the boy’s family.

Fire Officials say the youngster was playing with a friend around 2 p.m. when he tumbled down an embankment and fell into the water.  Rescue crews pulled him from the icy water about 800 metres downstream, at Strathcona Park, with no vital signs.

CPR was performed as he was loaded into an ambulance, but the boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at CHEO.
