OTTAWA – Police say autopsy results show that Ottawa’s first murder victim of the new year had been stabbed to death.
43-year-old Simon Hubbard’s body was found on Stanley Street in the New Edinburgh area on Saturday.
The Ottawa woman charged in his murder made a brief court appearance Monday.
26-year-old Jennifer Bird kept her head bowed as her lawyer discussed when her next court appearance should be.
Bird wore a royal blue sweater with her long-blond hair loose against her shoulders. She remained very still during the five-minute routine appearance.
Outside of court, her lawyer Israel Gencher tells 1310News he has not had the chance to speak with his client, who he says hasn’t lived in Ottawa for long.
“We’ve only had a very brief opportunity to speak,” he says, adding he hopes to meet with Bird privately in the next day or so at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, where she is being held until her next court appearance Friday.
Bird has been ordered not to communicate with three people — Jordan and Shannon Worek, and Candice Baron — or anyone at Hope Outreach.
