Drivers getting the message after holiday Counterattack

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The RCMP holiday drinking and driving Counterattack campaign wrapped up Monday, resulting in 470 people getting caught for drunk driving.
Between December 1 and 17, Mounties nabbed 272 people for drunk driving, a number Superintendent Norm Gaumont calls disappointing.
But he says people seemed to clue in after the campaign hit the halfway point and police saw fewer and fewer impaired drivers. “It seems to us the public got the message. We saw over a 40 per cent drop in charges in the second half compared to the first.”
Police handed out more than 3,200 tickets altogether, including more than 1,100 for seatbelt infractions. A little more than one hundred speed demons had their cars impounded.
Intersection infractions also dropped by about 17 per cent during the second half of the campaign, with 1,253 tickets handed out in total for things like failing to stop, failing to yield and not running a light.
