Man charged in weekend fatal hit and run

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – The man accused of killing Charlene Reavely and Lorraine Cruz in a weekend hit and run didn’t appear in court Monday afternoon. Cory Sater’s lawyer was there on his behalf. Sater has been charged with several crimes including impaired driving causing death.
While on a visit to Vancouver Monday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he’s open to revisiting a law that would bring harsher penalties for hit and run drivers. “We are always looking at ways that strengthen the law that will protect people, and hold those who commit heinous crimes, accountable for their actions.”
Several years ago Carley’s Law was introduced by then-Opposition Tory MP Dick Harris, after Carley Regan was killed by a hit and run driver. The law was defeated.
Meanwhile, a memorial for two victims continues to grow, days after the deadly crash in Port Coquitlam.
Mourners have been paying their respects at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Pitt River Road. Friends and loved ones gathered to light candles, and to leave flowers and mementos for 30-year-old Charlene Reaveley.
There are many written tributes including one that reads, “Charlene, I love you so much my heart is breaking.”
Reaveley and her husband had stopped to help another couple at the site of an earlier crash early Saturday morning. As Reavely helped Cruz and the injured the driver, a white Jeep Grand Cherokee sideswiped them. The two were killed instantly, but the driver took off.
