Layoffs coming for 200 Canada Post call-center workers

OTTAWA – A union official says Canada Post has ruined the long Easter weekend for about 200 of its contract workers.
Canada Post says they’ll start losing their jobs in July as the Crown corporation turns over most of its call-center operations to an outside company.
Patty Ducharme of the Public Service Alliance of Canada says the timing of this news is terrible just before a holiday.
The layoffs will begin with workers at its Winnipeg facility, and continue in Ottawa, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, and Fredericton until the end of the year.
Canada Post told the affected workers a year ago they’d be losing their jobs because a third-party provider, Minacs, is taking over call-center operations.
In a release, Canada Post says its in-house call center costs significantly more than industry standards.
Canada Post official Jon Hamilton says the call-center number will remain the same and the work will stay in Canada.
