It happened at 1:40 p.m., when the man and another contractor were standing on a concrete slab on a porch. The concrete broke and the pair fell into a 10-foot-deep cellar with the concrete slab tumbling after them.
The 48-year-old man was pinned under the concrete, but was still moving and had a pulse when paramedics arrived. It took 40 minutes to free the man, by which time he had lost his vital signs.
“At that time he did not have a pulse and he was not breathing,” said Jean Hamel, Ottawa Paramedics Service. “He had major chest injuries.”
The man was pronounced dead from his injuries between 3:30 and 4 p.m.
The second worker broke his leg in the fall, but was not trapped.
