Body discovered in Rideau River

Police are now sifting through their list of missing persons as they try to identify a body found in the Rideau River near Carleton University, Thursday afternoon.

A canoeist discovered a suspicious lump near Bronson and Riverside and once he realized it was a body he alerted authorities.

The person in question was said to be wearing winter clothes.

Several police officers and members of  the police marine unit arrived at the scene just after 6 p.m.  It took them nearly two hours to pull the body from the water.

An autopsy is slated for either late Friday or Saturday.

No road closures were in effect in the area, Thursday, although evening commuters were being asked to take alternates.
