Alberta government extends Slave Lake evacuation order another week

SLAVE LAKE, Alta. – Residents forced from their homes in Slave Lake, Alberta will have to wait up to another week to see what’s left of their properties.
The provincial government says an evacuation order will remain in force for another week.
Officials say it’s still not safe to return following last weekend’s wildfires that torched one-third of the town.
They say every property must be inspected for gas leaks, structural damage and health hazards.
The wildfire in Slave Lake continues to burn out of control — and it’s also making it difficult for investigators to determine the cause of a helicopter crash that killed the pilot on Friday.
The Transportation Safety Board says it’s having trouble getting a helicopter to lift wreckage out of Lesser Slave Lake so it can be more closely inspected.
The chopper that crashed was helping fight the fire.
